Released in February, "Tonight", the excellent third album from Scottish giants Franz Ferdinand, is arguably the band's most experimental to date. Unlike their earlier albums, which relied on generic alt-rock songs like "Take Me Out" and "Do You Want To", the band switched form their usual lineup of guitars, drums, and bass to incorporate vintage keyboards (in the hit-single "Ulysses" and the long, synth-heavy "Lucid Dreams") and even a human skeleton as percussion in the catchy "No You Girls" (listen for the fill!). Recorded in an old psychiatric hospital, "Tonight" allowed the band to experiment with the different acoustics of the rooms. For example, guitar solos were recorded in the basement, amp speakers facing upwards with a mic tied to a beam swinging back and forth over them.
"Tonight" is a great album, with a very minimalist storyline of a young man engaging in a night of debauchery. Listeners won't be able to help wanting to join the ride.
